Most skip hire companies don’t have a traffic problem. They have a wasted click problem. People search for things the business doesn’t do, from towns it doesn’t cover, outside the hours anyone answers the phone. The money goes, and the diary stays empty.

This guide shows the system we use on skip hire Google Ads accounts in the UK. It covers what to bid on, how to set a starting budget, which settings stop wasted spend, and how to turn more calls into booked skips. Every number below has a source, and the planning numbers are clearly marked as examples.

Start with the business, not the ads

Google Ads can only send people to a business that is ready to take the job. Before you spend anything, check three things that customers and Google both care about:

  • Waste carrier registration. Any business that moves other people’s waste in England must register. Upper tier registration costs £191.02 and is renewed every 3 years (GOV.UK). Show your registration number on your site. It is a strong trust signal.
  • Skip permits for the road. If a skip goes on the road, the skip operator needs a licence from the council. In West Sussex, a standard licence is £65 for 7 days and needs at least 10 working days’ notice, or a fast-track fee of £52 (West Sussex County Council). Explain this on your page so customers aren’t surprised.
  • Clear prices. UK skip prices range from about £60–£130 for a 2–3 yard mini skip to £160–£370 for an 8 yard builders skip (MyJobQuote, Sept 2026). Showing your prices filters out people who only want the cheapest quote, before they cost you a click.

Bid on the searches that book skips

Split your keywords by what the person wants, so each ad and landing section can answer that exact need:

  • Town + skip hire: skip hire Worthing, skip hire near me, skip hire Lancing
  • Size searches: mini skip hire, 4 yard skip, 8 yard skip hire, builders skip
  • Job searches: garden waste skip, rubble skip, skip for kitchen removal
  • Alternatives you also sell: skip bags, grab hire, rubbish removal

Then add negative keywords from day one. In skip hire, the most common wasted searches are jobs (“skip hire jobs”, “HGV driver”), council tips (“recycling centre opening times”), buying a skip (“skip for sale”, “skip lorry”) and DIY questions (“what can’t go in a skip”). Check the search terms report every week and keep adding to the list.

Only pay for people you can serve

This is where most budgets leak. Google’s default location option also shows ads to people who are only interested in your area. For a local service, change it to Presence, which targets people who are “likely to be located or regularly located” in your area (Google Ads Help).

  • Target a radius around your depot, or the postcodes you deliver to
  • Exclude towns you don’t serve, even if they’re close
  • Run call ads only in the hours someone answers the phone
  • Lower bids, or pause, on days you have no skips or drivers free

Set a budget from your numbers, not a guess

There is no official UK figure for Google Ads costs. Even the research sites say this (Whito). So work your budget out backwards from the number of skips you want to book:

StepExample numberWhere it comes from
Cost per click£3.20UK home services average, Q1 2026 (Whito)
Clicks that become a call or form10%Assumption for planning. Replace with your own data after 2–4 weeks
Leads that become a booked skip50%Assumption for planning. Track this in your diary or CRM
Cost per booked skip£64£3.20 ÷ 0.10 ÷ 0.50
Booked skips wanted per day3Your goal
Daily budget neededabout £192£64 × 3
Example only, not a forecast. Put your own numbers in each row.

Then check the cost per booked skip against your profit per skip. If a mixed-waste 6 yard skip makes you £80 after tipping and fuel, a £64 cost per booking leaves very little. That tells you to improve the conversion steps below before you spend more.

Start with enough budget to collect real data for 2–4 weeks. Then replace every example number in the table with your own.

Track booked jobs, not just clicks

If Google only sees clicks, it will find more clicks. Tell it what a good result is:

  1. Calls from ads. Google can count calls “that last longer than a minimum duration you set” (Google Ads Help). Set it long enough to skip wrong numbers.
  2. Quote forms and WhatsApp clicks on your website, tracked in Google Tag Manager and GA4.
  3. Booked jobs. Mark which leads booked a skip, and send that back into Google Ads with offline conversion import. This is what lets the bidding learn the difference between a price-checker and a real customer.

Why 95% of leads will never book (and what to aim for)

No honest agency can promise that 95% of leads will book. Some people are comparing prices, some are in the wrong area, and some need a skip next month. What you can control is how many good leads you lose.

Speed matters most. In a Harvard Business Review study of 1.25 million sales leads, companies that contacted leads within an hour were nearly 7 times as likely to qualify them as companies that waited an hour longer, and more than 60 times as likely as those that waited 24 hours or more (HBR, 2011).

  • Answer calls live in opening hours, and call back missed calls within minutes
  • Ask for the postcode and type of waste first, so you quote the right skip
  • Send a WhatsApp or text confirmation with the price, date and permit details
  • Follow up the same day on quotes that didn’t book

Make the landing page do the selling

  • Prices and sizes on the page, with what each size holds
  • The towns and postcodes you cover, near the top
  • Your Google rating and real reviews
  • Waste carrier number and permit information
  • A phone button that stays on screen on mobile, plus a short quote form and WhatsApp

For example, a strong skip hire page lists prices by size and waste type, says 7 days’ hire and tipping are included, names every postcode it covers and shows its Environment Agency carrier number. Each of those answers a question before the customer has to call.

A weekly routine that grows the business

  • Monday: check last week’s spend, calls, forms and booked jobs. Work out cost per booked skip
  • Search terms: add new negative keywords, and add good searches as keywords
  • Locations and hours: cut areas and times that spend without booking
  • Ads: test one new headline at a time, such as price, same-day delivery or reviews
  • Budget: raise it only on campaigns where cost per booked skip is below your limit

Common questions

How much should a new skip hire company spend on Google Ads?

Work it out from your goal. Multiply the number of skips you want to book each day by your cost per booked skip. Use the example table above to start, and replace the numbers with your own data after 2–4 weeks.

Is Google Ads better than Facebook ads for skip hire?

They do different jobs. Google Ads reaches people who are already searching for a skip, so leads are usually ready to book. Facebook and Instagram ads reach people before they search, which can work for skip bags and clearances. Most skip hire companies should start with Google Search.

Can you guarantee a number of leads?

No. Results depend on your area, prices, competition and how fast you answer. What we can do is set up tracking so you know your real cost per booked skip, and improve it every week.

Figures come from the client's ad account for the period shown. Results depend on the business, offer, market and budget, and are not a promise of future performance.
